About Ornamenta

Ornamenta 2024 is a regional cultural programme in Germany’s Northern Black Forest (Nordschwarzwald) from July to September 2024. First held in 1989, Ornamenta will be re-launched as a platform for contemporary cultural development manifested through exhibitions, public installations, performances, galas, symposiums, and community events. The three-headed Dutch-German curational team invites local citizens, curious neighbours, and adventurous (inter)national visitors to discover the often-overlooked Nordschwarzwald and to collectively reimagine the region through an exhibition route in the forestry area between Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Baden-Baden.

This summer, five German municipal districts will transform into thematic neighbourhoods (Gemeinden), each delving into topics of local and European significance. These new Gemeinden: Schmutzige Ecke, Zum Eros, lnhalatorium, Bad Databrunn, and Solartal, serve as platforms to address issues that affect people across different layers of society. From sunshine and clean air access to confronting social taboos and navigating technology's impact, each Gemeinde becomes a hub for dynamic interaction.

What we offer:

  • A free ticket for Ornamenta's opening weekend from 4 - 6 July 2024, including a preview of the cultural programme, a tour by the curators on 5 July (with around 30 other professional visitors) and attendance at the formal opening on 6 July
  • Covering travel expenses up to €150 per person*
  • A discount code for accommodation at Parkhotel Pforzheim or Ibis Styles Pforzheim

For whom?

  • Cultural policy makers working in a Dutch municipality or province. Preferably from the border region with Germany (Limburg, Gelderland, Overijssel, Drenthe, Groningen)

  • Artistic directors and curators of cultural institutions, project spaces and museums, interested in the exchange between cosmopolitans and agrarians

  • Artists and designers with five to ten years of experience, who are interested in Germany as a possible location for presentations, site-specific projects and collaborations

Please note that your application will only be taken into consideration if you are a cultural professional based in the Netherlands.

Selection procedure & deadline

This trip to Ornamenta offers Netherlands-based cultural professionals the opportunity to connect with the local cultural field of the Northern Black Forest region and to receive hands-on knowledge on how to set up a festival in a province. Not to forget, the curators dedicate their time to show participants around the exhibition route consisting of installations, performances and more.

In return, we ask participants to capture the essence of their trip in a medium of their choice: visual storytelling, reflective writing, engaging videos, you name it! If you are selected, you agree to us publishing this content on our website, social media and/or other channels.

In case of sudden unavailability to join the trip you are expected to organise a relevant replacement, direct colleague or another person to take your place.

The selection, organized by Ornamenta, will be based on the applicant's experience and motivation. Ornamenta will contact all registrants regarding the selection process during the week beginning May 6th.

*Please note: DutchCulture covers travel expenses up to €150 per person. Any extra/additional costs (which may include meals, accommodation and local transportation), are to be financed by the participant.
